Join us this Friday! Cards of the Tarot re-imagined by Portland artists...

Over 100 artists are creating their artistic representation of their selected card based on their own interpretation of its meaning and symbolism.

Join with us as we celebrate the rich and vast array of local talent and view unique and perhaps quirky, absurd or campy interpretations of the Tarot deck art. Artwork will be on display throughout the months of November and December.

Opening Reception Party including tarot readers, hoop-dancers, music, etc.

About Coleen:

Since Childhood I have had a passion for painting and creating using anything I could get my hands on. Born and raised in New Jersey, I left to pursue my education at the University of Arts in Philadelphia. During my time in college I had a chance to experiment with a multitude of different mediums and fine tune my artwork. I found myself to be in love with watercolor, pen and ink. I graduated with a BFA in illustration and am currently enjoying a freelance career consisting of children’s book work. In 2010 I completed my first book, “Baking with Friends, and have been selling my paintings and prints since 2000.

I derive most of my ideas from old folk tales, children’s books, songs, nature, and dreams. My intentions for my artwork are to illustrate a story within a single picture, preserve a special moment or thought, and to invoke your own interpretation of the image. I have also been trying out some fun new projects that incorporate my drawings and paintings with found objects and mixed media.

About Jenn Feeney:

My childhood was spent around a commercial print shop that my parents acquired from my grandfather. I guess you could say there is ink in my blood. I always had reams of paper to play with and would spend hours drawing and making things like play money or little flip books. By chance, when I joined the working world, I ended up working in print – first in corrugated and then in business print and promotions, which is still true to this day.

Currently I am working at a printmaking studio. Most of my prints are monotypes which are one of a kind prints, also known as a painterly prints. They are created by applying ink to a smooth plate, and then transferring the image to paper by means of pressure through a press. The process of making a monotype is so intriguing and exciting. I use everything I can get my hands on as a tool for making marks, adding or removing ink, spreading, thinning, stamping, stenciling.. just to see what kind of effect it will produce. And then layering the ink… color over color, texture over texture… it’s surprising and thrilling every time I peel the paper from the plate.

Painting has taken a back seat to my printmaking, but when I do paint I primarily use acrylic on wood or canvas. I approach painting the same way I do printmaking – trying different things to achieve interesting textures and colors. I prefer acrylic because it dries fast and I can continue to work on a piece without having to wait long for the layers to dry, but I also work in oil and I’ve taken a workshop in encaustic painting which I would like to explore further.

In Portland, creating art. No place I’d rather be, but it took me a while to figure that out. I was born in Dallas, Texas and spent my early years in various parts of the desert southwest before settling in Allen, Texas, where I completed my primary education. After high school, I headed off to college at the University of North Texas to major in graphic design with a minor in philosophy, taking a detour to explore life in Los Angeles and Palo Alto. After graduating from college, I traveled and worked as a graphic designer, moving from Texas to Colorado and eventually migrating North to Portland where I opened my own graphic design business in 2005.

In 2009, I decided to take a leap of faith and leave the routine and security of my design business to focus on what’s become my passion—oil painting and illustration. My favorite subjects are people and animals and whatever lies between. Drifting between realism and surrealism, I love recreating vintage America, reimagining the lives and stories of strong women, capturing the dormant kookiness or sweet serenity of a local cat, or just exploring the emotional color of faces in the crowd.

For me, art is as much about building community as it is about process and refining technique. I take every opportunity I can to get out and see what others are doing at art openings, local festivals, craft shows and galleries. And I try to do my part to build community, whether by hosting a small artists group, attending other groups or helping organize and promote craft shows. I also love thrift stores and everything vintage, hanging with my cats Sesame and Juneau, and listening to my husband talk on and on about all things cycling.

Joanne Licardo recently moved to Portland and currently teaches old techniques of the Masters.
“Painting to me, is how I express myself visually. From the palette, a colorful language emerges that can say things that words can not. It is a way of expressing deeper, more meaningful thoughts in a poetic way. Things there are no words for. Portland has embraced me and my art, and it is here, after 30 yrs in LA, and raising a family, that I am finally free to paint. It’s amazing to me what just having the time to paint can do. Painting is my love that will be with me for life. Teaching painting here in Portland is also an amazing experience. I have met so many talented people and learned so much from them.”- Joanne

Pattie Palmer Baker

Pattie has always loved words, so much so that, after many years of classes and experimentation, she has evolved a style which combines her poetry in calligraphic form with collages of paste paper resulting in images that are greater than the sum of their parts. Although her calligraphic style is based on the Carolingian alphabet from the 8th century and her paste paper process is adapted from a 17th century decorated paper technique, her work has a distinctly modern appeal. Pattie has been exhibiting in the Portland area for over ten years and is a past (and one of the founding) members of the Talisman Gallery.
